Teaching Philosophy

“I am a firm believer that ALL children, given equal access to quality public education, can learn. I am a teacher, mentor, writer, and communications professional with 31 years of progressive experience. I am particularly passionate about children and the way they learn; public education; and the appropriate uses of technology. I work hard to prepare students for a literate and academically rich future.

“In my classroom, I use a variety of innovative ideas from epistemic games to internet tools such as blogs, podcasts and wikis, but I don’t allow the technology to overwhelm the classroom. We use any tools available; from crayons to blank paper to laughter and tears to books and recess. Education is fun and a diverse classroom of equity, full of challenging opportunity to both play and learn is what my classroom is all about.

“I bring together communities of teachers, learners, leaders and parents. I believe in helping create simple, clear, direct and honest communications and learning channels between schools and those communities using inexpensive technology. I also build mutual support and trust the old-fashioned way: Face-to-face. I don’t shrink from hard work of relationship building every day.”
